The hills are gonna fill with crafty souls as a beloved Texas yarn crawl returns this October.
Story by Jenny Jurica
Calling all knitters, weavers, crafters. and fiber freaks! There’s a yarn crawl coming to Central Texas, and it’s bound to get you hooked (see what we did there?) on knitting.
The Best Little Yarn Crawl in Texas is ten days of yarn and craft shop-hopping, that includes 16 yarn shops, all within an 85-mile radius of the Texas State Capitol building.
Oh, and did we mention that it’s the largest yarn crawl in the country? You bet your bobbin it is! In fact, when this website first launched, we had three inquiries from knitters outside of the state asking us to do a story about the event.
Talk about having a solid reputation.
Yarn Crawl: An Autumn Tradition
Celebrating its 13th year, the October crawl is a great way to get out and explore some of the yarn shops in Central Texas. The Texas Hill Country is home to an eclectic group of yarn and craft shops scattered across the area. Each shop has its own personality, and visitors are sure to get a taste for new types of fibers and methods at each stop along the way.
People flock to the participating stores every year to learn new techniques, take in the sights and styles of different shops, and enter to win prizes at every stop along the way. At each participating business, visitors can meet indie artists and designer dyers, as well as score free patterns and other goodies. Each shopkeeper plans special events and debuts new patterns and items at the event every year.
A Real Sense of Community
Dana Hall, one of The Best LIttle Yarn Crawl in Texas’s board members and owner of Seguin’s You’re So Crafty (a walk-in craft studio), notes that in addition to the excitement of seeing familiar faces, the annual event is a great way to show off smaller Texas Hill Country towns that many people don’t frequent.
“People are always surprised to see how beautiful Seguin is,” Hall says, “and it makes them want to come back to visit. It makes me proud to be a business owner in Seguin.”
A sense of community and the energy that travels with the yarn crawl is what Linda Thomas, owner of Lucky Ewe Yarn in New Braunfels, counts as her favorite aspect of the crawl.
“It’s fun to see people ‘Social Crafting,’ at this event,” says Thomas, “since people typically do their crafts at home, alone. The Best Little Yarn Crawl in Texas brings people together and spreads a real sense of community.”
(K)not a Knitter? No Worries!
The yarn crawl is for everyone–knitters, crocheters, even people who aren’t crafty at all.
“I just love the energy,” says Thomas. “You don’t have to come as a group to feel like you’re part of ‘the group’ at the yarn crawl. People come together from different communities and explore new towns, new places, and make new friends.”
