Kenneth Hafertepe, a professor of museum studies at Waco’s Baylor University, has in recent years produced a collection of carefully documented and illustrated books that shed new light on an important topic: the architecture and domestic spaces of the Hill Country region. In reading his thoughtful, thoroughly documented works, one comes to appreciate the deeper significance of the construction processes, the homemaking skills, and the day-to-day lives of the nineteenth-century German immigrants who settled the Hill Country region.
Of particular note in Hafertepe’s collected writings is The Material Culture of German Texans (Texas A&M University Press, 2016). In this hefty, beautifully illustrated volume, Hafertepe gives readers a landmark, in-depth survey of interior design elements and the material culture typical of the region during the state’s earliest days.
