Free Museum Admission Days
In San Antonio, free adult admission is available at the following cultural organizations: Witte Museum (Tuesdays, 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.); San Antonio Museum of Art (Tuesdays, 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Sundays, 10 a.m. to noon); The DoSeum children’s museum (First Tuesdays to first 1,500 attendees; 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.); The McNay Art Museum (First Sunday and every Thursday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.) and The Briscoe Western Art Museum (Tuesdays, 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.).
In Austin, free admission is available at The Blanton Museum (Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; open until 9 p.m. on the third Thursday), Bullock Texas History Museum (First Sundays, 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.) and The Contemporary Austin (Tuesdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.).
Monthly Art Walks
Are you in the mood to meet some artists and gallery owners? If so, then you’ll want to make a point to check out Fredericksburg’s First Friday Art Walk (10 a.m. to 8 p.m.), Wimberley’s Second Saturday Gallery Trail (4 p.m. to 7 p.m.) and Boerne’s Second Saturday Art Beat (4 p.m. to 8 p.m.). Over in Johnson City, a group of galleries host Artwalk (see our June 2018 story) on the last Saturday of every month (4 p.m. to 8 p.m.).

Music, Music, Music
Up in Fredericksburg, the Fredericksburg Music Club (founded in 1937) offers free concerts on the third Sunday of each month. (Donations welcome.) Just down the road from F’burg, Luckenbach Texas Dancehall hosts a free, unplugged acoustic jam on most Saturdays called the Pick’n Circle (1 p.m.). Meanwhile the state’s oldest dance hall, Gruene Hall, regularly hosts free performances Wednesday through Saturday evenings, but the schedule varies month to month. On Sundays John T. Floore Country Store in Helotes hosts a free family-friendly dance.
