Story by Pamela Price
There’s something wonderful about surrendering the planning and coordination of a weekend excursion to the experts. As it happens, there are several great food tour options available now to help you make the most of the Hill Country region’s culinary, beverage, and cultural hotspots. With the wildflowers in bloom now through early summer, there’s never a better season to let someone else do the driving while you and your friends take in the roadside scenery.
Sound fun?
We’ve developed a list of options for you to explore.
Wine, Bourbon, and Beer, Oh My!
Based in Central San Antonio, Cottonwood Wine Tours (CottonwoodWineTours.com) offers a leisurely trip to Fredericksburg, complete with two wine tastings and a 90-minute stop in the town center for shopping, walking, and taking in the sites. Available seven days a week, the tours start at $115 each (roundtrip). Looking for something a little more robust? For $130 per person, Cottonwood’s Bourbon, Blush and Beer tour takes travelers two one distillery, one brewery, and a winery as it winds through Johnson City, Hye, and Blanco. For the urban fans, the company also offers a $35 walking tour of downtown San Antonio complete with kolaches, pan dulce, breakfast tacos, and local landmarks.
Touring in High Style
In the mood for something more luxurious? Treat yourself! Kerrville’s Hill Country Wine Tours (HCWineTours.com) offers transport via limousine or Cadillac Escalade to three area wineries. Included in the $139 per person excursion are lunch and tasting fees. Customers can also opt to add visits to historic Luckenbach, the venerable (and beautiful) Wildseed Farms on Highway 290, and chocolate and cheese pairings at wineries.
Beer & Mead in New Braunfels
Not everyone is keen on wine, of course. Luckily the region’s craft brewing scene is expanding, and OffRhodes Craft Beer Tours (OffRhodesCraftBeerTours.com) makes the most of the movement. Centered around New Braunfels, three distinct weekend tours are available for $90 per person. The city is the home to Wurstfest, the area’s beloved Oktoberfest party, and extending out to San Marcos and Seguin, visitors can expect beer, mead, keepsake mugs, snacks, and air-conditioned buses.
Food & History in Boerne
More foodie than oenophile or craft beer afficionado? Fret not! Boerne’s Hill Country Food Tours (HillCountryFoodTours.com) beckons locals and out-of-towners along the eateries lining the “Hill Country Mile” (a.k.a. Main Street). Offering one of the most affordable (and tasty!) options, this Saturday walking tour costs $65 per person, inclusive of two beer-tastings and with non-alcoholic options available as well. Also featured are cultural and historical trivia, providing participants with a deeper understanding of the community. Because food is emphasized and adult beverage minimized, the Boerne tour is a great option for families with kids 12 and up.
