When it comes to Hill Country music festivals, this event is the granddaddy of them all.
Among music festivals, the Kerrville Folk Festival is legendary. If you’ve never had the pleasure of attending this incredible multi-day event, here are some reasons that you might want to check it out.
1. It’s been around almost fifty years, making it North America’s longest continuously running music festival. (The first one took place in 1972.)
2. The festival is located on a Hill Country ranch south of Kerrville, just an hour from San Antonio and two hours from Austin.
3. Many now-legendary Texas singer-songwriters have come made their marks at the festival early in their careers. (Think Lyle Lovett, Willie Nelson, and Lucinda Williams.)
4. It’s a family friendly event, with special events for young and young-at-heart.
5. The Campground is about more than just being out of doors. It’s a space for impromptu jam sessions and to mingle with fellow music lovers.
6. People come from all over the world to see singer-songwriters in action, making the festival a means of connecting Hill Country culture with the world.
7. On the weekends, there’s an on-site craft village filled with handmade items ranging from fashion accessories to pottery.
8. You won’t go hungry, that’s for sure. Food services (and food trucks!) are available on the grounds, and organizers work hard to ensure a variety of foods for a variety of tastes.
9. If you’ve been meaning to polish your singing or guitar playing, they offer workshops. Look for yoga classes as well as beer and wine seminars, too.
10. The festival is just a great opportunity to get to know Kerrville, from retail therapy to outdoorsy stuff like kayaking and hiking.
