Found: San Marcos Mermaids (And Ralph the Pig, too!)

Back in the day, a trip to San Marcos to see Ralph the Swimming Pig and the mermaids at the old Aquarena Springs was a Texas thing–often the bookend to the obligatory summer family trip to The Alamo.

That’s probably why some of us felt nostalgic at the arrival of ten new mermaid statues this summer. Decorated by local artists, they honor the town’s, um, aquatic culture.  (The Fountain People of San Marcos produced the mermaid forms.)

Thanks to Gage Paine, we have a few casual photographs to share of these seven-foot-tall bathing beauties to share. You’ll find a map of the sculptures here and and a comprehensive list of the artists here.

Finally, if it’s been awhile since you visited San Marcos, we’ve got some tourist tips for you as well.

Enjoy!
