Story by Amy Johnson
Sometimes getting out of the city is just what you need, but getting out of town with your pup can prove a little challenging. That’s why we at Dog Friendly San Antonio (Facebook, Instagram) are all about scoping out the best places for dog-friendly excursions.
With our mild Central Texas winters and warm early spring, we’re coming up on a great time of year to travel regionally, so here are our top picks for hitting the Texas Hill Country.
From hiking, to shopping, to eating out or enjoying a beer, there are numerous dog-friendly locations for you and your favorite canine to explore.
Fredericksburg
Renowned for its wineries and German heritage, Fredericksburg is a perfect place for a day trip or weekend getaway with your dog.
What to do
The Fredericksburg Dog Park Association celebrated the grand opening of the Fredericksburg Dog Park last month. The city granted the FDPA approximately 6 acres of land within Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park, and offers off-leash areas for large and small dogs. Phase 2 of the park will raise funds to include more shaded areas, water features, ADA paths, and obstacle courses. Visit their website for full dog park policies.
If a day hike is more your thing, then Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is just a 20-minute drive from Fredericksburg. Although you can’t climb to the top of the E-Rock with pets, you can enjoy designated day-use picnic areas, campgrounds, and the Loop Trail. Pets must be attended and on leash at all times.
Located in the heart of downtown Fredericksburg, Dogologie is a must-see for dog-lovers. Not only do they offer a unique array of dog products, they also provide services to give your pup a break while you explore the town. Check out their Dog Pause hourly crate rental, and their Dogologie Haus, a VRBO rental located just a few blocks from the store. Insider tip: be sure stop by and pick up their full list of dog-friendly restaurants and wineries.
Where to Eat
Also located on Main St., Hondo’s on Main hosts a dog-friendly patio, with live music every evening. Open Wednesday – Sunday, be sure to try their stuffed and roasted jalapeños or their best BBQ brisket plate.
Where to Stay
Located within walking distance of Main Street, Peach Tree Inn is family owned and operated, and is pet-friendly to boot!
Johnson City
Located an hour and a half north of San Antonio, Johnson City is home to a number of family and dog-friendly excursions.
What to do
Take your pup for a short drive west of town to enjoy the great outdoors along the Pedernales River. Texas State Park rules for pets apply.
Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park
Although dogs are not allowed within the buildings of National Parks, everyone can enjoy self-guided tours on the LBJ Ranch. Check out our guidelines for taking your dog to a national park, along with a full list of dog-friendly National Parks in Texas.
Where to Eat & Drink
Aptly located on Pecan Street, Pecan Street Brewing offers a lunch and dinner menu along with craft beer, wine, and a pet-friendly Biergarten.
Where to Stay
Located right off of 281, Best Western Johnson City Inn offers pet-friendly rooms, with up to 2 80lb dogs per room for an additional fee.
Marble Falls
Marble Falls is located in the middle of the Texas Hill Country along the Colorado River, and is about a 2-hour drive from San Antonio or 1-hour from Austin.
What to do
A great place for fun on and off the water, Inks Lake State Park is 30 minutes northwest of Marble Falls. Check out the Devil’s Waterhole Scenic Overlook. Dogs permitted on leash only.
Ruff Park is an off-leash dog park located in the heart of Marble Falls.
Where to Eat & Drink
Not only does Save the World Brewing offer a dog-friendly patio (and great beer!), but all profits go to charity, too!
Located in historic downtown Marble Falls, RBar offers a dog-friendly deck and dog menu items.
Where to Stay
Located on Hwy 2147 West near the river, La Quinta Inn is a great budget- and dog-friendly option for overnight stays. Pets are welcome––up to 2 small, 30lb dogs per room.
