Photographed at The Garden Haus in Comfort, Texas (March 2018).

When it comes to preparing our own lawns and gardens for sunnier days, we like to turn to indie nurseries for ideas. There’s just something special about buying from local growers and homegrown businesses, the kind of people who know precisely what to plant—and when—right where we live.

Below is a selection of plant shops we’ve discovered over the years. If we’ve missed your favorite, leave a comment or drop us a note . We’ll try to give other nurseries a mention in an upcoming newsletter.

The Natural Gardener
Austin

For the hardcore organic gardener, this award-winning nursery on Old Bee Caves Road is a must-see in the capital city. They also have supplies for butterfly and herb enthusiasts and serve as home base for America’s longest continuously running organic gardening radio show.

Website. Address: 8648 Old Bee Caves Road, Austin, TX 78735. Telephone: 512-288-6113.

Hill Country African Violets and Nursery
Boerne

Situated out near the interstate—but loaded with tons of Hill Country charm and row upon row of green houses, this nursery is a staple for San Antonio-area residents. As the name suggests, they’re especially known for their African violets but don’t let the name fool you. The friendly, knowledgeable staff can fill you in on all kinds of gardening secrets, and we’re big fans of their herbs and Christmas poinsettia selection. Website. Address: 32005 I-10, Boerne, TX 78006. Telephone: 830-249-2614.

The Garden Haus
Comfort

This fabulous independent nursery may be a tad on the small side but it makes up for the size with a stunning array of succulents, pottery, and fun home decor items. There’s something here sure to please newbie gardeners and seasoned green thumbs alike. (Plus, we do love a Comfort road trip, as evidenced by a short Instagram video (below) we shot last month!)  Website. Address: 31 US-87 Comfort, TX 78013. Telephone: 830-995-5610.

Friendly Natives Nursery
Fredericksburg

With an appreciation for the Hill Country ecosystem, wildlife diversity, and sensitivity to resource conservation, this native plant nursery focuses on showcasing a unique collection of seasonal and perennial plants, shrubs, and trees. They also provide award-winning landscape design services if you’re in need of a yard makeover. Website. Address: 2207 N. Llano St., Fredericksburg, TX 78624. Telephone: 830-997-6288.

Spring Creek Gardens
Spring Branch

This garden was recommended to us by San Antonio’s Candace Dawn, our favorite succulent diva, and we couldn’t be more smitten with the selection of plants. As an added bonus, this fun business also sells chicken and poultry supplies along with pottery and gifts. You can also stroll past the chicken coops or chill by the fire pit. Website. Address: 11355 US Hwy 281 N., Spring Branch, TX 78070. Telephone: 830-885-6321.

If you love the Texas Hill Country living as much as we do, we bet you’ll “dig” our monthly newsletter, Facebook feed, and Instagram page.
