Lunch at High’s Cafe and Store

There’s something to be said for a morning spent antiquing with a good friend followed by a fresh, delicious meal at High’s Cafe and Store in Comfort, Texas.

The town may be relatively small (population 2,363), but High’s is a good-sized eatery. The colorful modern-looking building and its industrial-style interior stand out on Comfort’s historic High Street, but the more contemporary architectures isn’t jarring. No, the facade projects a fresh and inviting ambiance, the process of something “new.”

Between the seating out front and the ample tables inside, waits are kept mostly to a minimum—except on weekend mornings when things get a little wild. Regular patrons say, however, that the vibe and the staff are so reliably warm and welcoming that the brunch-time waits are more pleasure than pain.

The regular menu is available online. To keep things interesting, the specials change daily and appear to align with the season. First-time diners can expect soups, sandwiches, and other familiar offerings—including many gluten-free options.

On the day we visited last February, I settled upon a simple deli sandwich (on gluten-free bread) with a delicious side of pickled vegetables and a piping hot bowl of of pea soup. My friend opted for High’s famous chicken salad.

To be honest, my own expectations for the food were modest. I didn’t want to be disappointed. The restaurant is known as a “destination” eatery, the kind of place San Antonio city dwellers drive up with out-of-towners curious to “see” the Hill Country. But could it live up to all the hype?

I was skeptical.

And then our order arrived.

The meal rivaled—no, exceeded—the quality of similar big city lunches I’ve had at home or while traveling. Everything was fresh, delicious and flavorful. The soup in particular was a standout, packing a lot of flavor into each spoonful.

The price point for lunch was similarly satisfying, with sandwiches and most salads running about $7 each. There was more than enough for us to share.

Desserts are available, too, as is a limited selection of specialty and gift items. For those of you who can’t make a quick trip to the Hill Country to sample the goods personally, the restaurant’s website (see below) showcases a cookbook and High’s signature pepper sauces (Original, Habanero, and Chipotle Mustard).

To sum it all up, this Hill Country restaurant was so good that we’re planning to go back next time my friend and I are near Comfort.
