Boerne’s Hill Country Mile Named a “Great Street”

One of the area’s most beloved thoroughfares receives special recognition later today—and, yes, we swear this isn’t an April Fool’s prank.

On Monday, April 1, 2019, the Texas Chapter of the American Planning Association will announce they’ve selected Boerne’s Hill Country Mile as a “Great Street” through their third-annual Great Places in Texas award program.

Great Places in Texas recognizes the Lone Star’s Great Places – neighborhoods, streets, and public spaces – and celebrates how planning has played a vital role where we live, work, and play. The program promotes and recognizes great places while celebrating stories of exemplary planning that have resulted in stronger and healthier communities.   

The Texas program is modeled on the American Planning Association’s acclaimed Great Places in America initiative, about which we’ve written previously. The statewide awards recognize unique and authentic characteristics in three areas: streets, neighborhoods, and public spaces. Other cities to be recognized today include: Nacogdoches and Bastrop (Great Neighborhoods); Arlington, Houston, and El Paso (Great Public Spaces).

Boerne is the only community being recognized as having a Great Street.

“Hill Country Mile showcases the history of the city while being the center of Boerne’s continued evolution and economic growth,” said Doug McDonald, AICP, APA-Texas Chapter President, via press release.  “Updated design criteria and decades of progressive planning efforts [have] positioned this highly-amenitized street to be the key linking feature for business, entertainment, housing, and recreation on the Cibolo Creek Trail.” 

City of Boerne representatives reportedly will be on hand for an awards presentation in Austin later today. Look for updates, too, on the APA Texas Chapter’s Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram pages.
