Disclosure: The author and her family were treated to a complimentary meal at Peggy’s on the Green. All opinions expressed here, however, are her own.

A couple of years ago, a The Texas Wildflower reader messaged me to ask about the perfect place to celebrate her son’s graduation. Her family wanted an upscale place within an easy drive of San Antonio that would give them a taste of the Hill Country.

At the top of the list I provided? Peggy’s on the Green, an elegant restaurant in the heart of Boerne.

Later she wrote to say that her family had opted for Peggy’s – and enjoyed a truly memorable family meal.

And why not?

Launched by Chef Mark Bohannan in 2016 and tucked into a 19th century dining room at the newly renovated The Kendall, the establishment reflects the chef-owner’s foodie roots. Named for his own talented mother, the sprawling Peggy’s has the cozy intimacy of a family home.

This is assuming, of course, that your family was fantastically talented in the kitchen, kept a fleet of trained wait staff at the ready to anticipate your every need, and had a special knack for steaks and exceptional bar service.

A Memorable Boerne Meal

Although I’ve collaborated professionally with the Peggy’s team before—specifically on the creation of this website’s signature craft cocktail, my own family had never experienced the upscale food and service that marks Peggy’s as a destination restaurant.

That changed in earlier this fall, when we dined together in celebration of my birthday. It was a good opportunity for me to not only take a break from the kitchen, but also to investigate just how family-friendly one of the area’s most celebrated restaurants actually can be.

Because Peggy’s offers gluten-free options (I’m celiac)—and the staff is better versed than average about food allergies, it was a real treat to place our evening meal in their team’s competent hands.

A Family-Friendly Menu

Taking a teenager to dine at Peggy’s seemed like a bold move. Yet, as we soon discovered, the restaurant remarkably well suited for introducing older kids to fine dining. There’s a children’s menu available, too, one that makes no effort to shame those of us with kids who gravitate to chicken fingers and burgers.

In other words, the menu sends a clear signal that kids and teens are welcome. On the evening we dined, in fact, we saw several well-behaved children and teenagers around us.

Our growing adolescent, being something of a foodie, ordered a bourbon-glazed double pork chop with roasted potatoes and an apple frisee salad. Because he’s still young enough to succumb to the siren call of mac and cheese, he requested that as a side—and quickly pronounced it “the best mac I’ve ever had.”

In fact, he’s already put Peggy’s – along with a request to try their lobster mac and cheese – on his birthday celebration wish list. He also asked to come back at lunch, having reviewed the daytime menu and noticed a couple of affordably priced cheeseburgers.

Could there be a better endorsement from a teenager? Probably not.

Drinks and Steaks

Meanwhile, his father and I went opted for beef filets. We also had a glorious iceberg salad and a gigantic baked potato, both perfect for sharing. My husband also tried the soup of the day, a lovely gumbo with andouille sausage that called to mind our years in Louisiana.

Given the stellar reputation of the bar service, we ordered drinks, too. I selected The Texas Wildflower while he went for a delicious margarita followed by a nice cabernet.

None of it disappointed, and all of it was served up with the attentive service that typifies the Bohannan’s family of restaurants. (This includes the legendary steakhouse in the heart of San Antonio that we visited this summer.)

Yes, when it comes to a upscale, hospitable place where one can enjoy delicious food and beverages with one’s family, Peggy’s is hard to beat.

Peggy’s for the Holidays

Wondering how Peggy’s could fit into your 2019 seasonal plans?

What about splurging a little and letting this talented team manage your whole Thanksgiving meal? On Thursday, Nov. 28, 2019 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Peggy’s is serving up turkey, ham, fish and steak a la carte – plus a bevy of sides and a decadent selection of desserts.

Thinking you’d like to bring home one of Peggy’s legendary chess pies for your holiday buffet? Starting November 1 and running through December 20, customers can ring up the restaurant to place an advance order for a delicious chess pie ($30), with half of the proceeds benefiting the Boerne Education Foundation (BEF) through Peggy’s “Pie in the Sky” initiative. BEF in turn will earmark funds raised to support Boerne ISD’s Culinary Program, a full sequence of high school courses that ends with a senior capstone class in the culinary arts. (Looking for another way to pitch in with the Pie in the Sky effort? Dine at the restaurant during regular hours, purchase a single slice of the chess pie, and Peggy’s will donate the slice’s price to BEF.)

Whether you opt out of holiday prep and let Peggy’s on the Green do the work for you or simply drop in with family for lunch, brunch or dinner with guests, you’ll love the food, the service and the warm-hearted vibe that makes this legendary Boerne restaurant a Texas Hill Country favorite.

Reservations are always recommended at Peggy’s on the Green, especially during the holidays. For more information on reservations or the Pie in the Sky program, visit PeggysOnTheGreen.com or 830-572-5000.
