Let’s be honest: It’s a long way until consistently cooler weather, y’all. But September tends to bring somewhat lower temperatures, long shadows, and—on the calendar, at least—autumn’s official arrival.

To celebrate, why not head out of the house and into the area to explore some terrific cultural and foodie events? We’ve got a couple of ideas. (And remember to double-check all dates, times, and locations before heading out, especially when traveling long distances or during bad weather!)

First up, we’re feeling especially partial to Mesa at the Mission: A Culinary Crossroads slated for Thursday, September 5 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the historic Mission San Juan Capistrano in San Antonio. Sponsored by Mission Heritage Partners, the official friends’ group for the San Antonio Missions Historical Park, in partnership with the Texas Culinary Alliance, this exciting evening pairs the city’s unique culinary traditions with Becker Vineyard wines, cocktails and beer. From “Donut Hole Chicken and Waffles” to “Wagyu Tikka Masala,” there’s something to be had for every appetite—and plenty to wet your whistle with the help of featured brands like Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Garrison Brothers Distillery, and more. (Be sure to watch our own official Instagram feed around the night of the event, as we hope to share photos from the evening there!)

Still hungry?

Head over to Castroville for the Vintage Castroville Food and Wine Tasting on Tuesday, September 10 at 6 p.m. and tuck into a meal 175 years in the making. Hillside Texas Bistro Chef David Hill will be pairing local ingredients with Alsatian heritage recipes while Alsatian expert Mathieu Muckensturm introduces diners to wonderful wines from the region. It’s all part of the community’s tribute to its founding, and a fantastic excuse to visit Hillside Boutique Hotel in person.

Craving paella for lunch? Dorrego’s at Hotel Valencia Riverwalk now has a made-to-order paella station available Monday through Friday, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. ”While many of Dorrego’s menu items are Argentinian-inspired, the Paella dish is a salute to our hotel’s namesake, Valencia, Spain, which is the birthplace of paella,” said Trent Freeman, General Manager of Hotel Valencia Riverwalk. What could be more fun than a long lunch over paella on the Riverwalk?

Feeling more in the mood for art than food? We’ve gotcha covered there, too.

Late in the month—on the same weekend as the upcoming inaugural Boerne Retailers’ Style Show & Shopping Event, in fact, tiny Comfort welcome artists and art aficionados to the 7th Annual Comfort Art Festival on Saturday, September 21, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Look for work in a variety of media, including oil, watercolor, fused glass, jewelry, wood and so much more!

Finally, there’s the 33rd annual fall Home and Garden Show in San Antonio (September 27 to 29) at the Alamodome. With a variety of experts and vendors on site, it’s the perfect place to get a jump on your “honey-do” list.
